Precision Patterns

These visually arresting, 3-way intersecting columns have been seen by the millions of pedestrians who have crossed the Millennium Bridge between St Pauls and the Tate Modern since the project was completed in 2003.

Patterns & Moulds were tasked with the manufacture of timber master patterns and GRP moulds to create the tapering, elliptical forms.

The project demanded precision geometry, especially to achieve the outward pitch of the end structures, and proved challenging even for the architects , who were obliged to redesign the connecting knuckles to deliver the smooth free-flowing contours required of the finished units.

This project was one of the first utilising our CNC Router for the master tooling.
